About Us:

Brief Description of Taekwon-do:

Taekwondo (also spelled Tae Kwon Do, Taekwon-Do, or Taegwondo) is the most popular of the Korean martial arts and is the Korean national sport. While movies make Chinese Kung-fu the first thing we think of when we hear “martial arts”, taekwondo is the world's most commonly practiced martial art and is an Olympic sporting event.

In Korean, derived from hanja, Tae means "to kick or destroy with the foot"; Kwon means "fist"; and Do means "way" or "art". Hence, Taekwondo is loosely translated as "the art of hand and foot" or "the way of the foot and the fist". Taekwondo's popularity has resulted in the divergent evolution of the art. As with many other martial arts, Taekwondo is a combination of combat technique, self-defense, sport, exercise, entertainment, and philosophy.

Although there are great doctrinal and technical differences among private Taekwondo organizations, the art in general emphasizes kicks thrown from a mobile stance, using the leg's greater reach and power to disable the opponent from a distance. In sparring, turning (roundhouse), 45 degree, front, axe, and side kicks are most often used; advanced kicks include jump, spin, skip, and drop kicks, often in combination. Taekwondo training also includes a comprehensive system of hand strikes and blocks, but generally does not emphasize grappling.

Brief Description of our club:

The Catholic High GTF club is a no-nonsense taekwondo club where members rarely do anything other than practise taekwondo. We have the occasional team-building activities, but it never distracts us from the main purpose of the club, which is to provide an avenue for Catholic High students to learn and practise taekwondo.

We don’t have many members, which is good as the instructor can spend more time on each member to correct their stance and actions. The difference between training with a small group and training with a big group is significant. It is evident that we are very competent as a small band. Our most recent victory is the May 2006 Malaysian Open GTF Competition where we won a silver medal for team sparring and a bronze medal for team pattern.

Members are given GERKO marks as members of a uniform body. Committed members get very good GERKO grades.

Training sessions are held twice every Wednesday, 8am to 10am and 2pm to 4pm. Members are only required to show up on one of the sessions. Training sessions are instructed by Master Yeow Cheng Watt (phone no.: +6012-211773), who charges a monthly fee of RM15. If you are interested to join us or need more information, do not hesitate to see Joshua Tan (Class 5S5) or Shia Tien Shee (Class 5S3, +6012-3387308).
